Flink - Barely Holding On
by Nelson Heise

What I like instantly about this band and disc is that hardly any of their songs clock in over the three minute mark. Yes, I know some people love the "Bohemian Rhapsody" or "November Rain" epics, but I'm of the opinion that if you can't get your message across in three minutes, you are saying too much. Second cool thing about Flink and their album "Barely Holding On" is the guitar tone. I am just a sucker for the jingly-jangle sound of cranked up clean guitar tones; it's got such a super cool 60's rock vibe to it. Lastly, these guys bring some high octane energy to the table. They aren't straight ahead punk, but there is punk quality to the songs. They are also not straight ahead garage rock, but yet there is some garage rock to what they do. It's somewhere in between, and that is alright by me.

There is a level of diversity on the disc. For the most part it's a rocker, but they throw in sweet tender songs like the track "Cow" or "Take Me Home" just to mix things up. I dig the vocal performances, because they are a little rough and have a genuine quality to them. I don't think all the songs stand out by themselves, but as a collection they work. I never find myself getting bored with any of the tracks when played straight through, which needs to be accredited to the songs length (love the short songs). I also found myself getting into one of the more hard rocking tracks called "Volvo" about cruising around in the aforementioned car, which has a fun drum break down in it. This is defiantly a cool disc, with smart song structuring and good energy; a worthwhile listen.
