Squareshooters - I Am the Keeper
by Crystal Erickson

The Squareshooters represent every band that really wants to make it, but doesn't-simply because they sound like every other band that really wants to make it, but doesn't. The Squareshooters' sophomore album "I Am the Keeper" tries keeping in the vein of local alt rockers Soul Asylum and the Replacements, but provides little worthy of note.

Quick comparisons made elsewhere of the Squareshooters to Modest Mouse are weightless, unless "Dials" and "Constant Show Finesse," are what come of the band after dropping Issac Brock's signature use of metaphor-or anything definitive of Modest Mouse. Yet those tracks remain slight hits amidst considerable misses. "This is the Sound" is redundant, and just plain irritating after several rotations, wholly dissatisfying the title's claim ("this is the sound/this is the sound/this is the sound that turns me around").

But the main problem on "I am the Keeper," lies in the simple fact that no band member, familiar riff, influence or track can remotely overcompensate for an album so lacking in even subtle innovation. Perhaps if they tuned up a bit, the Squareshooters' next album will come nearer to being the keeper this effort's title so boldly boasts, though contradicts.
