Article – The Almighty American

By Thomas Rehbein

With various singer-songwriters regularly sprouting up in Our Land of Great Lakes, it’s easy to pass many of them up, lest they were at least semi-famous front persons in a former life. Every now and again, though, one shines through beckoning to be heard. Continue reading

Article & Video – Sister Species – Star

Rebecca Marx

Sister Species is a seven piece “orchestral pop” band hailing from Minneapolis that is fronted by sister’s Emily and Abby Kastrul. The band’s 2016 release Closer Now explores the sacred relationship between those that we share a bloodline with, including the working through of the inevitable issues that arise as we grow up so close to one another. Interview – The Awful Truth – Glisten

Kelsey Simpkins

After a year and a half of recording, Minneapolis quartet The Awful Truth has reemerged in the depths of winter with an album of hazy summer tunes to temper the coldest of nights. Out on Jan. 6 on The Homestead Records (We Are The Willows), Glisten invites light and focus on being present, unconditional love, and navigating one’s subconscious desires. Continue reading

Jim Walsh’s Mad Ripple Hootenanny celebrated its 10 year anniversary at The Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis on November 10th, 2016. The host of the Hoot–Jim Walsh, was there to facilitate the post-election feelings and frustrations that the players carried burdensome in their hearts. In fact, many of the people inside of the Cedar had walked along with anti-Trump protestors–Gary Louris of the Jayhawks amongst them–as they journeyed to the show. Interview – Vicky Emerson and Sarah Morris – Keeping the Home Fires Burning

By Rebecca Marx

When I interviewed Vicky Emerson and Sarah Morris early in the Spring of 2016, I knew immediately that there would be a follow up of some sort. The “secrets” that they divulged about the US radio charts, and just how they were navigating the music industry as independent artists really resonated with people who were trying to do it DIY style. For those same folks, check out my update on what the two have been up to, and for a rock n roll read/expose; I recommend the book by Semisonic drummer Jacob Slichter: So You Wanna Be a Rock & Roll Star: How I Machine-Gunned a Roomful Of Record Executives and Other True Tales from a Drummer’s Life. By Rich Horton

In my spare time, I find artists to hang at The Coffee Shop Northeast and since I have been doing that I have met some great artists. Alexandra Motz sent me an email a couple years ago wanting to put her artwork up. What struck me about her art, is that it had a certain style to it, shapes and color fitting together to create unique pieces Continue reading

There is no mistake, you are in the right place. Pachyderm beckons. The studio once still and silent is awash with people inside and out. The drive up to the 1963 built Frank Lloyd Wright inspired house is ringed with gates festooned with majestic elephants, and in the planted bed in front of the prairie style rambler there lives a trio of Pachyderms, trunks joyously raised in greeting.
