I can be a real sucker for a good ole bit of country and western rock, especially if it comes with that perfect male and female vocal blend that lingers, and alights together in all the right places. MR DR nails that on every “drunken love and sobering truth” track of their debut EP Summer in the Backseat.
Dave Mehling of The Fontanelles and Stacy K have been performing live as MR DR since 2015, and recorded Summer in the Backseat last year at Hideaway Studios in Minneapolis. The EP is their twist on a “little bit country, a little bit rock-n-roll”, and they do a great job of it. It certainly doesn’t hurt that they have local guitar virtuoso Thomas Nordland adding his formidable talents on the baritone guitar.
“Lead Me On” is a fast paced song that showcases the rocking side of the duo, an absolute toe tapper with Stacy K taking the lead, her vocals beautifully edgy, but sweet. My favorite track of the EP is “Do You Miss Me?”. Nothing better than two singing protagonists that can really volley back and forth at one another in a kind of a singing duel. I don’t know who won the duel, but the song makes me care.
I want you to care too, to listen, to support local music, and support MR DR at their EP release show for Summer in the Backseat at Palmer’s Bar April 21, 2017 where they’ll be joined by Winona Forever & Pleasure Horse:
