The fun part about this 365 days of local music deal, is finding music you have never heard of before. The Blacksmith’s Daughters is quite the hoot. I can see this group appealing to a broad audience, young and old. They have another band as well called JulyDa which is more rock and a little bit darker. We’ll have a track from that next month when they release their Debut EP, June 9th at The Warming House.
Oh, and the cool part, the name isn’t just to be smart – their dad is an actual Blacksmith.

This past weekend Kid Dakota re-released their seminal debut record “So Pretty” and was announced as the special guest joining Murf, Lunch Duchess and The Great Went at this month’s Back to the City Showcase at Mortimer’s Bar on Thursday 5/31. In advance of that show here is a series of interviews that frontman Darren Jackson recently band’s excellent new record “Denervation,” including also three in-studio performances of songs from that new LP recorded, mixed and mastered at the Minnehaha Recording Company.

It was when shooting the music video for “Misfits & Losers” in New Orleans that Courtney Yasmineh received a warning immortalized in the opening minute of her most recent LP, High Priestess and the Renegade.
“Fortune teller down in New Orleans drew a Tower Card; you know what that means.
He said ‘Beware doll, you’re bound to fall,’ and ever since that day I’ve been falling.”
In this, the first of two long-form video interviews with Courtney Yasmineh to be released ahead of her early-evening “Songwriters’ Showcase” event with Hannah von der Hoff at Mortimer’s on Thursday, May 31st, Yasmineh reflects on her creative life since that moment. As well as three in-studio performances recorded, mixed and mastered at the Minnehaha Recording Company, this video interview features readings and reflections from Yasmineh’s recent novel “A Girl Called Sydney: The Coldest Place.”
You can catch Courtney Yasmineh and fellow songwriter Hannah von der Hoff at Mortimer’s Bar between 6 and 8 pm on the final day of this month, Thursday May 31st. Between now and then, Back to the City will release second long-form interview with Yasmineh, including an in-depth discussion of every song on her new LP, “High Priestess and the Renegade.”
