Local Music and Art

It’s coming up to fifteen years of Rift being around in one form another. There have been starts and stops, big ideas and rebirths. Many writers, editors, helpers, artists, etc. have helped out over the years, and for them, I am greatly appreciative.
The view from here has been great watching musicians, bands and local artists explode into something fantastic. There are also those who came and went, either by leaving town for bigger things. Or those who decided to be an artist wasn’t for them.
Riftmagazine.com has stayed quiet for more than two months. My last attempt at trying to post regularly lasted about five days. It’s not like I haven’t been here before. So saying Rift will be over on a specified date or we are closing down shop seems pointless.
I have been cleaning up old files, old print issues, emails and other Rift related stuff. In between now and our 15th anniversary (May 1st), I still will be posting some new and flashback stuff. Also posting some videos and tracks of things I forgot to post or missed.
There is a new age upon us for art, and what the internet and media will become. So I am open to keeping Rift open-ended, even though it might seem mostly silent there after May.
Many ideas have bounced around in my head, where people could post things themselves, or something along those lines. I just haven’t found an easy way to have that happen, without technical or visual issues.
I am open to ideas, so feel free to email me at riftmagazinedotcom@gmail.com – I would love to hear from you.
Remember to keep supporting local music and art; it needs you.

There is something to be said about raw and experimental music. It can have more energy and emotion. Greta Ruth’s debut EP The Quiet While seems to embody this. Recorded all at one time, no overdubs or edits which suits the music well.
A new single called “Sweet Pace” which has a video shot in Super 8, fits with what Ruth is trying to achieve artistically and stylistically. Check out the video and the new EP on Bandcamp.

A band separated by two and a half hours of highway, Emily Haavik & the 35s play heartfelt, string-filled alt-country up and down the greatest of the interstates, I-35. They put out their first EP, “You Were the City,” in December of 2016, and two years later they are releasing their debut full-length album, “Ease Back.” The tracks were born out of a cabin in the northwoods and made much, much better at the Hideaway Studios in northeast Minneapolis.
Vocalist Dave Mehling (Gaelynn Lea, Portage) formed The Fontanelles in 2010 with then-stranger and current guitarist Darin Rieland over beers and a shared love of alt-country at the infamous 400 Bar in Minneapolis. Jason McGlone and Beau Jeffrey joined in 2012 to reform the rhythm section. They released their debut album, Strangers Please Take Care, in 2015, and are working on their second.
