REINA DEL CID
Faced with the question of influences, Reina del Cid cites literary rather than musical heroes. She commands a flexibility of language reminiscent less of Regina Spektor or Ingrid Michaelson, artists she is often compared to, but more of Virginia Woolf or Sylvia Plath. Yet there is a Newtonian balance of forces in Reina del Cid’s band: for every droll phrase or inventive image pushing the music toward the realm of the cerebral, there is a corresponding musical contribution from the richly talented Toni Lindgren. The young guitarist is adept at orchestrating and fleshing out the skeletons of del Cid’s songs into an engaging brand of pop rock, equal parts stratified and accessible. These lyrical and musical forces have never combined more compellingly than in the band’s sophomore album, The Cooling.
Recorded at the historic Pachyderm studio in Cannon Falls, Minnesota, The Cooling showcases the dark side to Reina del Cid. Over lilting, swelling strings in the title track she explores what “life” might be like in the hours and days after one has died: “And they said / hell would be fire and smoke / but in the end / it’s the cooling that scares you the most.” From the frenetic palimpsest of Lindgren’s tapping guitar in the opening track to the stripped down solo acoustic “Morse Code,” the terrain of The Cooling is anything but uniform, and yet it holds up as a cohesive work of discovery, maturation, and growth for the songwriter and her band.

RED DAUGHTERS
“I suggest you catch these dudes in town while you still can. They seem the type that would split to the woods for the weekend and never come back. Regardless the twangy, organ-heavy jams are a breath of fresh air in Minnesota where it seems the forecast is heavy on the hip-hop, 80’s synth-pop and dork-folk. Red Daughters fit the bill to catch waves on The Current but would also fit nicely in the middle of KQRS airplay.” [More Cowbell]
“Red Daughters are serving up some ballsy countrified rock-and-roll true to the Minnesota soil that bred Dylan.” [Tripwire]

POCKET WATCH
Formed in May of 2014 and originating from the hallways of McNally Smith College of Music, Pocket Watch consists of nine female musicians with one goal: to throw down some funky grooves and take the Minneapolis music scene by storm. Inspired by legendary funk bands like Parliament Funkadelic, The Time and Sly & The Family Stone and new age powerhouse groups Lettuce, Galactic and Dumpstaphunk, Pocket Watch blends new and classic sounds. Also inspired by neo-soul, R&B and hip hop acts like D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill and Hiatus Kaiyote, these talented young ladies create a sound completely their own. Pocket Watch provides tight rhythms, solid mobile horns, and infectious vocals that shift from sultry to powerful. Not only is their music in the pocket, but their irresistible stage presence will turn your head and move your feet.
