Transparency first, I was a volunteer at the event with no intention of writing about it. Driving home from the experience I felt compelled to. I have written about events that Sarah Edwards (I Am Sarah Edwards) has put on before (I AM MPLS) and have found her commitment and promotion of local arts, business, and style of the Twin Cities to be admirable. Incredibly, she even devoted herself to putting up profiles of Target employees who were recently laid off!
In a nutshell: meet up, work with great people (hats off to Kasey-Sarah’s intern), make-up touch up by Blush Beauty Room, nosh (Glam Doll Donuts), shop the pop-ups (Moth Oddities, June Resale, Arc’s Value Village, Babes on Legs, Silver & Stone, Litany jewelry, and My Sister’s Closet), enjoy live music via George Scott McKelvey (great long fade out), groove to DJ GirlNamedJane as the models aged 8-98 (some with actual walkers) walked the runway. The majority of the models were clients of the Goodman Group who partnered with Edwards to create the event. The models who were styled by Rewind Vintage, Arc’s Value Village, Scarborough Fair, and Roe Wolfe were thrilled to be there and enjoyed the effusive support of the audience. The documentary that inspired Sarah to create the special day closed out the event.
‘Advanced Style: The Documentary’ was screened at the Varsity Theater and floored me. Our culture is obsessed with youth. We trim, tuck, cover, cinch, and do all that we can to look like we are forever twenty (one). The documentary features several women in their late 80’s plus who are dynamic and larger than life. Most twenty year olds couldn’t manage the lives these women lead. They are proud of who they are and their style whether it be campy or elegant. They wear the clothes, the clothes don’t wear them. The mirror doesn’t reflect back at them with dysphoria, no subscription to self loathing and no stress about how to turn back the clock. The subjects radiate confidence and they give of that self love to everyone they encounter. They are most beautiful in those interactions. They are stars!
Their spirit and style is ageless, timeless, and classic. An inspiring thing to see style represented not as a self absorbed and distorting thing but as part of a vibrant life no matter your age. Please watch the jaw dropping documentary and find your fabulous self.
