Carey Keavy of Twin Cities band Faun the Flame delivers a 4-track solo project full of heartbreak and smoky vocals in new EP Distant Lands. A blend of soft solo guitar and band music, the EP at times is a bit unpolished, but redeems itself at the end with the touching closing track, “Who Am I.” Keavy’s voice is reminiscent of a young Fiona Apple, hitting just the right note of melancholy and mischief in the sanguine ballads.
The first track, “Distant Lands,” opens with simple acoustic chords and evolves into more electronic elements. Keavy’s soulful vocals expresses the earning of the bittersweet love song well. “Earthquake” is heavier on the snares and piano, and at seven minutes long, the song could be an interlude. However, it sets up more like a pop song and changes direction halfway through towards more of a rock jam session. The last track, “Who Am I,” is an easy favorite as it carries the most consistent hook as well as touchingly written lyrics.
In Distant Lands, Carey Keavey brings us through the attractions and pitfalls of a relationship through a sweet mix of bar stool acoustics and folksy pop. Falling into the genre of pleasant indie coffee shop music, tracks like “Who Am I” and “Gold In My Pocket” could easily be rotating in the iPod of somebody newly single, or on a playlist in Caribou Coffee. “Distant Lands” is a short work that shows much promise, giving us a taste of Keavy’s potential.
