This year at the Square Lake Film and Music Festival, Dosh is scoring the film Universe which was an inspiration for Stanley Kubrick’s Space Odyssey. Paul Creager who founded the festival, every year tries to pair up a local act with a public domain film. Then the local act creates a score for the film and it is played live with the film at the festival. Dosh was able to talk to us about, the process and how it is all going to go down at Festival.
Rift: How did you end up working on this project.
Dosh: Paul Creager from the Square Lake Festival has been asking me to do a live score for a while and this was the first year that I was in town for it! He suggested it, and after one viewing, i was in.
Rift: Is the composition for it all laid out or is there some room for improvisation.
Dosh: I’ve worked on it for about a month now, composing a number of sections on my sequencer. I have the basic flow down, but there will for sure be room for improvising, especially on drums. All of the different sequences that I have have been recorded into my sampler, so i have at this point, 30 different patterns at the touch of a button. The main themes will be played live on Rhodes and NordLead, with some violin samples as well…
Rift: What is your set up for playing it live?
Dosh: My usual setup, a one man spaceship: Drums, rhodes, 3 loop pedals, a nord and a memotron, and a dr sample…..
Rift: Apparently the guy who originally scored the film was a well known as film composer in Canada, did that make it more of a challenge or were you not too worried about that.
Dosh: Not worried at all. His score was very ominous, and i liked it, and could see why and how Kubrick was informed by it. the start of this film and 2001 are very similar. I ain’t no Strauss, we all know this. I wanted to bring a little bit more glory and just awe and beauty to the film. I mean, this film was commisioned by the Canadian Film Board; it’s an educational movie, but the tone is very dark. I wanted to bring a bit of light, as the universe is truly unimaginable and glorious.
Rift:. Will your version be available after the festival?
Dosh: I haven’t recorded it in a format that would work to sell at the show, but after all this work, i’ll for sure put something out on Bandcamp soon after the festival!
