All pop bands should have a violinist in their pocket. That’s what I learned at the Postina CD release on Friday night at the Pourhouse. And they should all be as versatile as Faith Eskola, who also plays violin, keyboards, mandolin and sings backup. She’s very unassuming on the stage but brings a depth and quality to the sound of the band as a whole.
Postina has been around since 2009 when they received attention as a finalist in the battle of the bands contest at the Basilica Block Party. The composition of the band has changed a lot since those days. They joked on stage about a deep history through Craigslist. I suppose it’s a pretty typical way to pull a band together. It is a way to draw in a diversity of musicians. We also learned that the latest iteration of the band is connecting through collaboration on songs.
Their latest CD, Write a Better End, is poppy. Singer Beth Renee sings fast lyrics with an easy pace set by drummer Dave Donovan especially in a song like Retrace the Steps. It’s the sort of song you might sing along with just the right punctuation for traffic. Shadow has a different tempo that builds more with the help of founding member Andy Root on guitar and Ryan Masterson on bass. Again I think it’s the depth of the violin that gives the songs a certain edge and the mandolin helps the songs stand out from the other pop songs.
We’ll see what the future has in store for the band and the members; will they follow a path together or will we see several stories moving forward.
