Poolboy’s debut self titled EP is far from ordinary. Poolboy is able to set themselves from the rest with their bawdy lyrics, and their not so black and white meanings. They describe their music in the genre of Agitated Psych Rock ‘n Roll, and that is exactly what it is.Poolboys’ lyrics explore the deep thoughts of one’s mind, and they say the things most are afraid to say. You are constantly asking yourself “did he seriously just say that?” when in reality, you have thought that or felt that way as well. They could be compared to Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd with their lyrics.
While none of the three bands sound the same, or even have a similar style. However, all three are able to “cross the line” with their lyrics. Poolboy is able to make sense of all the crazy, and twisted things that we think about. The actual words may not make sense, but when you immerse yourself in the music, the lyrics make complete sense. It’s indescribable.
The actual album, Poolboy, has no set meaning but the stories of each song bring it all together. The album starts off with “King of Cool,” which is an angsty and vindictive song about love and loss. “Saturn’s Return” is about being trapped in one’s self and not being able to escape this state of being, whatever it may be. “Centerfold” is a profusive love song. It adds an ease to the album and evens out the overall mood.
Each song is very different than the next one. All of the elements of symbolism and metaphors really lets the listener connect with the band on a very personal level that isn’t easily done. The mood of the album as a whole shifts a lot. But the mood that the band is feeling at that moment is incorporated right at the beginning of each song. With the mood, music and lyrics that Poolboy brings, it makes their music like poetry.
Seth Conover, the lead singer, says that no one really knows who they are, and they are able to find themselves through their music. Conover says “I don’t care how it sounds as long as I’m finding myself in it.” That is also what sets Poolboy above the rest. Their music is completely their own, and no one can do it the way they do it.
The album went in a different direction than intended, but it went in a way that they are happy with because it shows who they are and what they are about says Conover. The album shows the band’s personality completely. The name Poolboy doesn’t have an actual meaning, but yet it fits them perfectly. Conover describes it as somewhat “naughty” and “man child-ish.” That’s why the self titled EP is genius.
All the way down to the lyrics, the music, and the meaning behind it, makes Poolboy’s debut a work of art.
