Rob Meany CD release at Icehouse 5/1: Upbeat music for adults
By: Ann Treacy
Rob Meany and many iterations of his band played for a full house of happy diners on Sunday night. For the last 15 years, Meany has been playing with his band Terramara, this is his first solo album. It’s called Ferris Wheels Unbound.
Meany plays jazzy contemporary music for grownups. His music is very upbeat, it makes full use of all of the musicians around him. With the full string section (thanks to The Laurels String Quartet) behind him he played a lovely version of Eleanor Rigby, well a slightly modified version but if you can remember the impact of the violins on that song you can hear what Meany was able to add to his original music as well. I’ve also heard several comparisons to Steely Dan.
Meany plays the keyboard. He has a strong voice. The songs are very melodic, very catchy. They’re the sort of songs you find yourself humming in the shower, but not with the same talent. He reminds me of a Midwest Barry Manilow.
