On the flip side of the local music scene, there are many accomplished and talented musicians that you hear about but maybe don’t get the same recognition as the buzz bands that come and go.
John Keston has been involved in many cool music projects over the years, and I wrote about his collaboration with Nils Westdal back in 2007.
His newest project under the name Ostraka is called Isosceles, and it’s a synth-fueled instrumental trip through lush musical landscapes. Mixing older synth sounds with modern sounds, the music is full and beautiful. Melodies build and blend, and you find yourself following the journey throughout the songs.
Keston wasn’t born here but considers himself a Minnesotan through and through. Some of the local bands he has been into lately are Leah Ottman (Lott and We are The Willows), Ayvah (Ava McFarlane), Graham O’Brien and Mike Hodnick (Kindohm).
Some of his favorite local places include Analace Coffee, Lu’s Sandwiches, The Sample Room and of course Icehouse which is probably the best fit for a live performance of Keston’s music.
