Minneapolis alternative band Loop Line manages to make discordantly random music sound perfectly in place with new album Tides. With additional vocals by Mike McGarry, Tessa Slisz, and Caitlin Jackson,Twin Cities musicians Luke and Paul deliver songs that float effortlessly into being without coming across as sloppy. They build well off of the “Tidal” concept, creating music for every mood.
The album opens with the fittingly titled “Tidal Track,” pun-intended, composed of vocal harmonies that rise and swell like the ocean. The energy is amped-up in the next track, “How I Know,” where the frenetic guitar is accompanied by gentle choral refrains. More classic rock is incorporated into “A Writer That Doesn’t Write,” as the rock n’ roll opener drifts into clashing riffs. One of my favorite tracks on the album is “Accelerating,” perhaps due solely to the groovy percussion line. It’s a sugar-sweet serenade to love at first sight as the singer croons, “Her eyes were locker, my tongue was tied/ Our minds were lost, our hearts went blind.”
Tides as a whole has few choruses and the songs aren’t necessarily catchy, but as noted before, it’s a mood piece. The energy ebbs and flows, leaving the listener thoroughly “Tided” by the end.
