Back in June I reviewed a short EP from Chruth Fabian, who resides in Rochester, MN. I figured it would be a year or so before I heard from him again and low and behold a new EP has entered my email inbox.
While the music comes across as interesting and unique, I am not sure what an audience would look like for Chruth Fabian. It seems more fitting for a cafe or small jazz club, and might not fit the local rock clubs.
Track one seems the most thought out, with vocals and a shoegaze feel. It was my favorite track of the four.Tracks 2-4 have more of a jazzy wandering, clean sounds. The songs start out simple, and he slowly starts layering over the top using a loop pedal.
This new EP was recorded at The Old Blackberry Way with Neil Weir, on Halloween day this year.
Chruth, who also goes by Brad Fabian, works out of a food truck in the summer, to fund his fall and winter musical exploits. He said he is “always looking for music that seems sincere.” He listed a diverse list of influences, from Billy Stewart, Frank Zappa to Tupac, Ween, and Flying Lotus.
Fabian has played with some local acts on Drums and is self-taught on guitar, which has directly led to his playing style. “When I was a kid, I would sit and play one note at a time until I found patterns that I liked or heard in my head,” said Fabian.
Fabian is on a journey, leaving behind these pieces as he eventually heads to his greater goal. “I hope that the loop pedal music will lead to a full-fledged group with constant touring as the main goal. The loop pedal is not the end goal. It is to build songs that work well” said Fabian.
This recording is a step forward from his previous release, and while it might take a few releases and the composition of many songs, Fabian’s perseverance seems to move him forward as a musician. Sincere songs that work well should be in his future.
