Review by Desney Cody
Minneapolis hip-hop and rap duo, Vision the Kid, give music a new found hope. For the people who have been a hip-hop and rap fan since the ‘90s or just loves the hip-hop from the ‘90s, like me; maybe realizing that an era had ended some years ago. The realness that Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G. had is not there anymore. Vision the Kid has a love and passion for music that is not always prominent in today’s music and artists. Vision the Kid takes old school jams like Bob Seger and Queen, samples the music and maybe even the chorus, then goes over it with their original and inspiring lyrics. Even the album title Fly by Night is a tribute to the band Rush.
Vision the Kid’s lyrics are nothing like what today’s music culture sounds like. They come from such a different place. Most rap today is all about the sex, drugs, money and women. Vision the Kids can separate themselves from that because they are very personal. It’s not the same reoccurring theme throughout the album. It is a stream of consciousness, and a story of life, with all of it,’s struggles and gains. When listening to their music, you feel a connection that is rare. It doesn’t matter if you are listening through your headphones, in your car or at a concert. Even if you’re unfamiliar with the situations in the songs, you can insert yourself in the midst of it and feel the emotions deeply. It’s autobiographical.
Songs like “Fly by Night Moves” set the whole tone of the album, about staying humble and rolling with the punches. It’s something you could listen to at any time and in any mood. Then it goes into the songs “The Show Must Go On” and “Long Distance Songs” that are feel good songs, which are also inspiring. It’s about the gaining and maintaining the “power,” despite the hardships. Toward the end, they have their more vulnerable tracks with “Your Protector” and “The Angels of Cuba” that tie the whole album together.
Vision the Kid’s album Fly by Night is visionary and exceptional. The whole album can separate you from the outside world. With the passion like the ‘90s hip-hop, along with the creativeness as legends like Queen and Bob Seger, it’s a game changer. Fly by Night is an album that will have an impact on not only local music scene but could change what music becomes.
