Driving into work back in early January, I was going over an idea in my head, how the music industry is changing, as is all industry and business. For some reason, the David Bowie song “Changes” came into my head. Couldn’t have been more than 30 seconds later, they announced on the radio that Bowie had passed away, and that song played for the news item.
Weird coincidence or messages from space or wherever? Just happenstance I am sure, but sometimes you like to feel like there is something magical with the universe that is driving and inspiring you.
The crazy thing is, I was never a big David Bowie fan. Never bought an album, but I would always enjoy hearing a Bowie song. Bowie was unafraid to transform himself as a musician, as his career went on, and as the times and tastes changed.
Let us fast forward to now, with all the political craziness, racial strife, and uneasiness. Things that affect us all in different ways and in varying degrees.
Most things resolve over time, you lose your job – you get another one. Things get hard, things get better. Except for death, most things you can fight or work your way out of.
Unfortunately, with the way the economy has been and how things are getting more expensive, it can be a challenge just trying to make a living. The work and fight has gotten much harder.
What keeps it together for some us? Creativity and how we absorb art and music. Music and art have long been the solid foundation for us during the good times and the bad.
Also, our community and local businesses bind us together as places to talk about what affects us and what needs to get done.
So all of this has inspired me to change up the way riftmagazine.com works and what we cover. While our main focus has been local music, branching out to the arts and local business seems like a positive transition.
We have to make sure we promote and be customers of the local economy whether it be art, music or your local institutions.
Riftmagazine.com has come full circle, 12 years of doing the best we can for the love of local music. We have attempted to pull in more arts and local business coverage but it has been far and few between.
This is our chance to evolve and with everyone’s help achieve a symbiotic relationship between the fans, creators, and riftmagazine.com.
With this change, Rebecca Marx who is our new editor will be bringing a fresh new take to our music and art coverage, while I will be working behind the scenes to pull in more local people like ourselves to read our pages, write for us and convert people to worship all things local.
We would love to hear from all of you, to let us know what you have been doing and enjoying locally. If you hit our help page, first it will ask you for $5 but also it will ask for your story ideas and multiple places we will be spreading the news.
Change is good, and we are excited to show you all what we can do.
