In his second project, “Gutter Couture,” Minneapolis producer Tru layers diverse musical elements into a couture-level confection for the ears. The EP starts off in “One by One” with a screeching refrain, over heavy bass drops that slide into a tribal drumline. A more EDM aesthetic is demonstrated in “Renaissance Society,” where record scratches and synth echoes intertwine with the warped orchestral chorus.
Tru demonstrates his versatility with the concept-driven track “French Impressionist,” which, true to the name (no pun intended), puts the listener in the middle of a Monet painting. The track starts off with the sounds of running water and smooth electronic slides, subtly building into a crescendo on synth chords and an EDM beat. This comes after “Alfred Blue,” which harbors more of a gritty hip-hop mentality with its snares and claps.
They say that the brain needs to have all its’ senses engaged in order to avoid distraction when intaking information, and “Gutter Couture” does this in a sonically fascinating way. Each track holds enough unique overlay to thoroughly command your full attention, without being cheesy or overwhelming. “Gutter Couture” toes the line between Hip-hop, EDM, and Pop, to create a auditorily complex collection of songs.
